How the visa application charge works
Most Australian visa applications carry a visa application charge (VAC), paid when you lodge. The main applicant pays the base application charge. Each family member included in the application pays an additional applicant charge — one rate for applicants 18 and over, a lower rate for children under 18.
Some applications carry extra charges. If you apply for certain temporary visas while you are in Australia and have held a temporary visa since you last entered, a subsequent temporary application charge of $700 applies per applicant. Contributory parent visas carry a large second instalment, paid before the visa is granted. The charge is generally not refunded if the application is refused or withdrawn.
The Department indexes most charges on 1 July each year. The amounts on this page took effect on 1 July 2026 and apply to applications lodged on or after that date.
